February Rider of the Month Sandoval Racing

02/02/2012 by Pockets

February’s rider of the month is Sandoval Racing. Sandoval Racing consists of two brothers and their father. Sandoval Brothers Racing was started by their father Steven, who had a passion for motorcycles and the desire to win. From his first ride with his father on his Harley, Steven was hooked on motorcycles. Just like most people, Steven’s first year competing on a bike was difficult to say the least. Even though his first race on his 100cc Honda was challenging, Steven knew this was the route he wanted to pursue. In only his second season of racing, Steven was able to claim the AMA district 17 86-160cc class championship, the State of Illinois half mile TT championship and a short track championship.

Steven’s next obstacle was moving up to the 250cc class. Steven handled the transition to the 250 class relatively easy and finished top three in the class. After finishing out the 250 class on a high note, Steven entered the 450cc and open amateur classes. The 2011 race season favored Steven, as he claimed the AMA district 17 championships in the 450cc class, as well as the open amateur class.

Thirteen year old Ryan is the oldest brother out of the Sandoval Racing camp. Ryan is currently competing in the AMA flat track series. Ryan has many wins under his belt and the 2010 racing season saw Ryan claim the 7-11 year old 75-125cc class championship. The 2012 racing season will see Ryan entering the AMA district 17 250cc class. Ryan is ready for the 2012 season and looking for another championship.

Rounding out Sandoval Brothers Racing is their youngest member Alex. Alex competes in district 17 and is fortunate enough to be mentored by Garry Hardy. Alex completed his first year of competition in 2011 and claimed the district 17 75-125cc championship. The 2012 season brings high hopes for Alex, as he looks to grab back to back championships.

All of Sandoval Racing would like to thank their sponsors Hot Rods, Pivot Works, Hot Cams, Cylinder Works and Vertex Pistons. They have helped us so much throughout the years and we appreciate everything they have done for us, Thanks guys!

January Rider of the Month Victoria Seamans

01/03/2012 by Pockets

January’s rider of the month is Victoria Seamans from Lake Village, Arkansas. Victoria has wanted to race motocross since she was a little girl. Even though Victoria’s father didn’t purchase a bike until she was fifteen years old, she knew that riding motocross was definitely in her future.

Finally, Victoria’s father was able to purchase a dirt bike and from that day forward, Victoria was hooked. Victoria and her little brother Josh would ride the newly purchased bike in a dirt field near their house for hours. Once Victoria felt comfortable on the bike, she began racing. Victoria entered her Yamaha YZ85 at local Arkansas races throughout the summer.

As Victoria’s passion grew for racing, Victoria and her father would travel out of state to race the local series in Texas, Mississippi and Missouri. After her first year of racing, Victoria knew she loved racing motocross so much, that she wanted to make a career out of it.

Victoria set her goals high and decided that she would work hard to become a professional motocross racer. Victoria took all the necessary steps in preparing herself to reach her ultimate goal. She won the 2008 Arkansas State Championship Series in the women’s class. Victoria knew she had to keep pushing herself, so she started traveling to Lake Whitney, Ponca City, Branson and other well-known National events.

In 2009, after only two years of riding, this 5 foot 2 inch, 105 pound girl made the difficult jump to the big bikes. 2009 was a tough year due to Victoria breaking her wrist, but she continued to work hard and pushed through the season.

In 2010, things started to turn around for her racing career. Victoria qualified for Loretta Lynn’s in the Women’s class for the first time. Through the ups and downs of Victoria’s motocross career, she has finally reached her ultimate goal.

In May of 2012, Victoria will be racing in the Women’s Professional class at the Hangtown Motocross Classic. Victoria knows she wouldn’t have been able to reach the pro level without the support of many people. Her father being the first, because without him and the sacrifices he has made, Victoria’s career would not be possible. Also, it takes great sponsors like Hot Rods, Pivot Works, Vertex Pistons, Hot Cams and Cylinder works, to keep the bike at the front of the class. Victoria appreciates everyone’s help and is continuing to work harder than ever, as she waits for her professional debut.

December Rider of the Month Nick Peterson

12/05/2011 by Pockets

December’s rider of the month is Nick Peterson from Kansas City, Missouri. Nick has been into extreme sports his entire life.  As a child Nick always wanted a dirt bike, but couldn’t afford one. As a result, he spent his free time honing his skills at the local skate park roller blading. It wasn’t until August of 2005, and to Nick’s surprise; his father finally bought him a 1999 RM 250 from a garage sale. Fortunately for Nick, he had just learned how to ride a dirt bike a few weeks prior. This allowed Nick to start hitting the trails the day he received the dirt bike.

After a few weeks of riding, Nick decided it was time to go racing. Nick started in the beginner class and even won his very first race. After several races in the beginner class, Nick decided it was time to step up to a more competitive class.

In 2006, Nick entered the school boy class and won his first ever local series championship. After winning the championship, Nick set his sights on racing Loretta Lynn’s.

In 2007 Nick achieved his goal and made it Loretta Lynn’s in the 125/250 novice mod class. Once at Loretta Lynn’s, it didn’t take Nick long to realize his endurance wasn’t up to par and that this sport is more physically demanding then he originally anticipated. As a result, Nick didn’t receive the results he was looking for.

Once Nick returned from Loretta Lynn’s, he decided to start taking his motocross future more serious. Nick set up a training and nutrition program and entered the intermediate and open classes in 2008. Nick was leading the points in both 450 classes, until he broke his knee cap. Luckily for Nick, this didn’t require surgery and he was able to win the championship in the open class and place third overall in the intermediate class.

In 2009 Nick traveled to Lake Whitney and Oak Hill for the spring nationals. Nick raced the 450 intermediate, open amateur and the 16-24 classes at both events. At Oak Hill Nick tore his ACL, but continued racing the local series anyway and won another Missouri State Series Title. Nick entered the pro class in 2010 with high hopes, but the lingering ACL injury finally required surgery, unfortunately putting Nick on the sidelines. While Nick was recovering, he worked at a friend’s custom trailer shop to make extra money to pay for his racing. While Nick was cutting foam on a table saw one day, the saw unfortunately kicked back and cut off his thumb, leaving Nick unable to ride for nine months. Injuries and struggling to get back into racing shape have forced Nick to extend his time off the bike and focus on regaining his confidence.

While off the bike, Nick spends his free time running his business as a mechanic, which supports his racing efforts. Nick uses Hot Rods, Pivot Works, Hot Cams, Cylinder Works and Vertex Pistons for all his racing needs and is extremely happy with the products! There are several people that make Nick’s racing possible, but Nick credits his father the most for sacrificing so much in his life so Nick can go racing. Nick keeps a positive attitude and when he’s having a bad day riding, he tells people, “A bad day of riding is better than a great day doing anything else!”

November Rider of the Month

10/31/2011 by Pockets

November’s rider of the month is seventeen year old Katara Paulk from Salem Oregon. Katara began riding when she was in third grade and for her eighth birthday she received a Kawasaki 50. After years of riding the 50, it was time to upgrade and for her twelfth birthday Katara received an SL100, which had been painted pink with little devils on it just for her. Katara spoke of a memorable camping trip she took with family and friends. Her father had a Kawasaki 250 at the time and told Katara if she could start it, she could ride it! Fortunately for Katara, she was able to start and ride her father’s bike and has been hooked ever since!

Katara began her racing career at the age of fourteen on a Yamaha Blaster, equipped with a 240 kit. She was able to win the Friday night summer series in the blaster class. Katara was fortunate enough to be accompanied by her father Bill and sister Matallica the first time she stepped onto a motocross track. Her father used to race pro motocross and has taught Katara everything she knows about riding and racing and was a big help for her first event. Just as Katara’s racing career was taking off, things took a turn for the worst. At the age of sixteen, Katara was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a long battle, Katara is cancer free. She credits her recovery to her racing family for showing her how to push through anything life has to offer. Shortly after her recovery she was back on the bike and landed a sponsorship from Octane Performance ATV. Katara was able to race motocross and exhibition TT races in Oregon and California at sanctioned Monster X Entertainment shows. Katara loves signing autographs, letting the kids sit on her ATV during the pit parties and hearing the crowd roar as they cheer her on. After being introduced to flat track racing she fell in love with going fast and turning left.

Katara competed in the women’s class and the youth sport class for girls and boys, ages eighteen and under. She placed first overall in the women’s class and fifth in the youth sport class. At age sixteen, Katara also raced a class that contained mostly male pro riders. Her performance in this class eventually landed her a level one sponsorship from Hot Rods, Pivot Works, Hot Cams, Cylinder Works and Vertex Pistons. Katara said, “All five of these companies are awesome and are very supportive of my racing career.” Katara supports her racing by raising Rottweiler’s to offset the cost of her parts, entry fees and a U-Haul to get to the track. Kataras advice to young riders is to believe in yourself and don’t let challenges in life get you down. Walk through doors as they open and remember your life on and off the track are reflections of each other.
